Assessments of Accented English
At ACE, we know that even people with the same first language background or the same occupation can show significant individual differences in their English pronunciation, comprehension and overall communication skills.
Because of this, each of our clients are asked to fill out a questionnaire about their language background, perceptions of their own understanding of spoken English and their ease or difficulty in speaking English and making themselves understood by others. Included are questions about the client’s particular need to speak with clarity and confidence while using English in daily life. It is very important that we understand your expectations, concerns and goals since personality type and motivation level play significant roles in our training strategies. We tailor all of our approaches to the individual and to his or her unique English language needs.
In addition to the informal questionnaire, a recorded speech assessment is used to generate customized lessons and practice materials. Results are used to determine which speech sounds and other intelligibility factors such as syllable structure, intonation pattern and non-verbal communication patterns are most challenging for the individual as they attempt to understand the English being heard around them and make themselves easily understood at the conversational level.
Once the assessment is complete, we review our findings and present our recommendations to you. We will then discuss which speech training sessions would help you the most.
Each of our training programs also include a post-assessment. This is used to reveal the percentage of improvement that a client has made since the onset of the program. We then provide you or your company with a written report of these findings.
NOTE: If you do not wish to begin your journey towards improved communication effectiveness at this time, but wish to have your English listening and speaking skills assessed, we offer the Speech Assessment separate from our programs and services.
