Accent Modification for the Medical Professional

Healthcare professionals are held to the highest standards of performance.

Because of the critical need for effective, efficient and accurate communication in the medical setting, we offer a separate Accent Modification Program tailored to the Medical Professional.

Programs are designed for International Medical Students and Graduates, Medical Residents, Fellows, Attending Physicians, Research Physicians, Doctors, Nurses, Administrators, Office Staff and any other medical professional who desires to be a more effective communicator.

Medical terms are difficult to pronounce and clear communication can be compromised by heavy accents and distracting speech patterns. At ACE, we understand that it is as important to be communicatively competent as it is to be technically competent.

Using medically oriented assessment and training materials, we will guide you through the necessary steps to successfully integrate into the North American health care system. We do not believe in a “one size fits all’ approach. Programs are designed to build on each professional’s present level of linguistic and cultural competency. 

Our customized programs offer self-paced practice opportunities, expert feedback, real-world application, personalized scheduling, continuous support, and a combination of auditory, visual and kinesthetic instruction and practice techniques necessary to achieve rapid and measureable results.

Communication Skills Training includes:

Spoken English Skills (pronunciation, presentation skills, teaching skills, doctor-patient interactions, collaboration, daily conversation)

Listening Skills (formal presentations and everyday conversations in the medical setting)

Pragmatic Language Skills (using voice to project compassion and confidence, use and interpretation of verbal and non-verbal cues, strategies to repair communication breakdown, use and understanding of common medical abbreviations, acronyms and idioms)

Medically Speaking Inventory:  Assessment of Accented Speech

Used to assess and document the Medical Professional’s pronunciation and intonation patterns before and after formal training.

Results of the inventory assist in the identification of auditory perception and speech training goals to be targeted in subsequent training sessions.

This inventory uses words and phrases found within the medical setting.

Administration Time:  20-30 minutes.  Used in conjunction with a structured program to improve listening and speaking skills for the medical professional.
